99% of job candidates undersell themselves on their resumes.
I have reviewed A LOT of resumes (probably 1K+ at this point) and majority have bullet point examples that are not detailed, do not describe the action taken, and do not have a data-driven result to indicate success.
How do I know this? Because when I conduct 1:1 resume reviews and we dive deep into the example, the candidate ALWAYS reveals hidden gems.
So what do we do? We use the STAR Method to 10x each example.
Below is an example of a common resume bullet point example (the before โ) and what this same example looks like when applying the STAR Method (the after โ ).
โ Before
Managed multiple large scale projects with strict deadlines and delivered a successful client track record.
โ After
Single-threaded owner managing 6 clients at the Director of Marketing level, totaling $10M+ in annual revenue. Within a 2 month period, was responsible for planning, executing, optimizing, and reporting on 3 different Facebook advertising campaigns per client (18 total campaigns). Delivered a 30% ROI (beating expectations by 15%) and resulted in a 100% client retention rate.
What is the secret to writing this bullet point?
โ> 3 simple sentences using the STAR Method. Focus the first sentence on the Situation + Task. Then describe the Action in the second sentence. And end it with data-driven Results.
โ> The โ example details scope of work, stakeholders involved, ties together the action and results, and opens up the interviewer to ask specific follow-up questions (e.g. โYou mentioned managing 18 ad campaigns in a 2 month period, how did you manage this workload?โ or โDelivering a 30% ROI and beating expectations by 15% is impressive, what did you do with the ad campaigns to over-perform?โ).
